Orthopedic and post-surgical massage

Therapeutic massage and manual lymphatic drainage for people recovering from surgery or injury, in your home across Acton, MetroWest and Northborough. I work alongside your surgeon's and physical therapist's instructions, not instead of them.

Who I work with

  • Knee and hip replacements
  • ACL, meniscus and other knee surgeries
  • Rotator cuff and shoulder surgeries
  • Spine surgery, once you have your surgeon's clearance
  • Cosmetic and abdominal surgeries, where your surgeon recommends lymphatic drainage
  • Sprains, strains and overuse injuries, after a doctor or physical therapist has checked them

What a session can help with

  • Swelling and fluid buildup, using gentle manual lymphatic drainage
  • Tight, guarded muscles around the surgical area
  • Stiffness from moving less, and compensation in the back, hips and shoulders
  • Feeling more comfortable and relaxed during a long recovery

Therapeutic massage doesn't replace physical therapy or medical care. It works best alongside them.

How it works

  1. Book a free 15-minute intro call. We talk through your surgery, your surgeon's precautions and timing. Then I send you a link to book your first visit (75 minutes, $225, with extra time for intake).
  2. Fill out the client packet. Include your surgery date, your surgeon's precautions and any restrictions.
  3. I review it before your visit. If I need your surgeon's clearance first, I'll let you know and send a simple form for them to sign.
  4. At the session we position you comfortably, avoid the incision and any area your surgeon has restricted, and work at a pressure that feels right.

Questions

How soon after surgery can I get a massage? It depends on the surgery and on your surgeon. Lymphatic drainage is sometimes started within days when the surgeon recommends it. Regular therapeutic massage near the surgical area usually waits until the incision has closed and your surgeon has cleared you. For knee and hip replacements, many surgeons clear massage near the surgical area around 6 weeks after surgery. When in doubt, ask your surgeon, and I'm happy to coordinate.

Will you massage the incision or scar? Not until it is fully closed and healed, and only with your surgeon's OK.

What if I have a blood clot or signs of one? Massage isn't safe with a known or suspected blood clot. If you have new swelling, pain, warmth or redness in one leg, contact your doctor right away, before any massage.

Do you take insurance? Not at this time. Some HSA or FSA plans cover massage therapy with a doctor's note; check with your plan.

Is in-home massage OK if I can't get on a table easily? Yes. I can work with you side-lying, semi-reclined or seated, whatever is safest for your recovery.
